Notes for the submission of interactive comments

General notes

  • Please be aware that interactive comments have to be of substantial nature and of direct relevance to the issues raised in the preprint, and they must not contain any personal insults. Abusive comments may be censored by the ACP editors (partial or complete deletion of the text).
  • Comments should always be written by persons since they are accountable and responsible for the content they post. It is not allowed to use AI tools to generate comments.
  • Comments on preprints posted from 1 January 2021 are composed using a WYSIWYG editor to produce HTML content. Preprints posted before 2021 undergo discussions with server-generated *.pdf comments composed by using either plain text or LaTeX formatting. In any case, complex content can be uploaded as a *.pdf file and will be displayed as a supplement to the comment.
  • Please prepare the text of your comment by using a text editor of your choice. Then, please open the comment posting form, transfer the text into the form, and add formatting where applicable. Since the comment posting form is a web form, there is the chance of a system timeout.
  • In the comment posting form, the title and author will be included automatically. The subject entry is not part of your comment but indicates its content on the interactive public discussion web page.

Specific notes for referee comments

  • Please keep the obligations for referees and review criteria in mind.
  • Please remember that a referee comment should be structured as follows: an initial paragraph evaluating the overall quality of the preprint ("general comments"), followed by a section addressing individual scientific questions/issues ("specific comments"), and by a compact listing of purely technical corrections at the very end ("technical corrections": e.g. typing errors). In general, interactive comments should be of a substantial nature and of direct relevance to the issues raised in the preprint. As a referee, however, you are encouraged to also include details of any technical and typographical corrections required to assist the authors in improving the final revised versions of their manuscripts. On all accounts, interactive comments must not contain any personal insults.
  • If you would like to contribute an extended comment, please prepare and submit your manuscript according to the ACP guidelines for authors. Extended comments undergo the same process of peer review, preprint posting, and interactive discussion as articles and technical notes. They are equivalent to the peer-reviewed comments in traditional scientific journals, and unlike interactive comments they may achieve publication in ACP if sufficiently substantial.

Specific notes for community comments

Community comments can be posted by any registered member of the scientific community under the name of the commentator. If you would like to contribute an extended comment, please prepare and submit your manuscript according to the ACP guidelines for authors. Extended comments undergo the same process of peer review, preprint posting, and interactive discussion as articles and technical notes. They are equivalent to the peer-reviewed comments in traditional scientific journals, and unlike interactive comments they may achieve publication in ACP if sufficiently substantial.
